Gallbladder Ectomy ? (week 7)

While I am not sure what the procedure is called I do know that it is not any fun.  On Tuesday of this week my wife had surgery to remove her gallbladder.  Why am I telling you this you might ask?  Well when we went to meet with the surgeon I noticed something interesting on their wall.

The poster as you can see advertised a new service the hospital is offering.  You can request appointments, email your doctor, get results from tests you had ran, pay bills, and get your prescriptions renewed.  You can even do it from an app on your phone.

I have not used the service as I am not older nor sick or hurting at the moment but it looks like it would be very helpful to patients and I thought it was a really interesting use of social media by a company.  These are not the social media channels we usually think of I guess you could say they are of the intranet variety but they are definitely a new way of connecting to patients, breaking down walls in communication with people that can be very important when something is going wrong with your health.

What interesting or even "homegrown" uses of social media have you all seen lately and what do you think of the hospital's new idea?

Thanks for reading.  Share your thoughts and I'll see you in another week!

  1. That is a great idea! The use of social media has exploded recently. There are still some industries that are late in adopting these strategies. The medical field is one example. I can see social media being used much more often in the medical field in the future. It is interesting to think about what the social media scene will be like in 10 years. I feel like everyone will be connected to everything at all times. Another point to consider is the ability to gain a competitive advantage by conforming and modifying as technology improves. The medical companies that have created this application have a convenience benefit that they can now offer their clients. This gives them a competitive advantage over other medical companies where you have to spend more time calling and meeting to accomplish tasks. It seems that the companies that are adopting social media strategies early are the most competitive.

  2. That is something that will be very useful for a lot of people. The amount of physically unconnected people or not even that as much as busy people, this will be a great help! You have a person that is in a bad situation because they are there at the doctors office and let along the time to be going there so this is something that will allow people to easily access the information they need at any time of the day. This is going to be what the future is looking like for a lot of people and organizations!

  3. I just recently went to the doctor at mercy and the docotor told me about this. I think it is where every medical facility should go to. I had to have a few things done and I was able to find out even before the nurse could call me. It is just a great way to communicate to patients. And being able to find it on your phone made it fast and efficent in the palm of your hand. Thanks for sharing this
